Hi! Thanks for visiting my site. Let me introduce myself and provide a little background so you all know where I’m coming from. My name is Sue and I’m a young-middle-aged women with spunk, spark and a lot going on in my life… like, just about everyone, right? I’ve had plenty of energy raising my 2 children…now adults successfully launched. (Wahoo!) My other half and I had jobs in corporate America for 35+ years and ran the rat race with the best of them. We travel quite frequently and love our life.
I thought we ate fairly healthy, always exercised and play hard. We are an active family who ski’s, bikes, kayaks, hikes and runs. But, as I started to get older, my doctor and I noticed some changes in my blood tests. All of a sudden, I was considered pre-diabetic (yes, family history) with metabolic syndrome and high cholesterol. Yikes! My doctor told me it wasn’t a question of IF I would get diabetes but WHEN.
She said that perhaps it might help if I tried to exercise more but the clincher is….she continued, “Honestly, you know MORE about exercise, health, diet and food than I do. As doctors, we’re only required 2 hours of diet and nutrition training. The majority of our education is spent matching up your symptoms that you present to me here in the office…with the DRUG(s) we are trained to prescribe to treat it!” Really?? This really shook me and was square in my face that she wasn’t trained and wasn’t capable of helping me SOLVE any of my health problem, like I wanted to. The only thing she was trained to do was to help me LIVE with the problem by taking medication. Gosh, I didn’t want to go that route!
So, needless to say, she went on about some recommendations for prescriptions like Lipitor, Crestor and Metformin and many more. Sorry, I said, I won’t take any of them but will see what I can do myself with diet and exercise to halt these diseases and my doom!
So, this blog is my story and journey in to what propelled me in the direction of reading, asking questions, and learning more than you could imagine about food, diet, nutrition and some science behind it. The good news is that as I learned, I got my Health Coach Certification so I could help others as well. But wait, it got worse…..
In addition to this, my blood calcium levels skyrocketed overnight 4 years ago. What was the cause? I had two (2) non-cancerous golf-ball size tumors…one on my right thyroid gland and another on one of my parathyroid glands. Long story short…..What these tumors do is cause your body to react by pulling the calcium out of your bones, weakening your bones and depositing the calcium in to your blood stream while you’re body is scrambling to get rid of the excess calcium in your urine. So, within a week, surgery was scheduled in New York and I had both tumors removed and the right half of my thyroid removed as well. Thankfully, I had no cancer in any of the tumors and the surgery was successful. (Lucky me! I’m so thankful, believe me!)
However, once you go through a fright like that, you really start looking at your life and what the heck you’re feeding yourself and how it rings true….if you don’t take care of yourself first, who will? Are you eating to just feed your taste buds or are you really nourishing your body? Good question….we all know that the purpose of eating is to nourish your body. It was like I was given a second chance here and this was truly a blessing in disguise.
So, this experience pushed me even further in the direction of thinking about what I actually eat and how to take care of myself. I wasn’t sure what that even meant, honestly. So, I started some Guided Meditations for relaxation and sleep. I put that as a priority. Next, I decided to clean up my diet. I used to eat the Standard America Diet (SAD) which included everything on the old food Pyramid from the 50’s including all meat, pasta, bread, sugar, bagel and buns and more. I learned that real WHOLE, FRESH, CLEAN foods (organic, when you can) are really good for you, beneficial for your body, and that the chemicals, preservatives and man-made ingredients that they put in store-bought packaged food can actually be the cause some of the same health problems I’ve experienced. So, now I only eat food that is sold with none to minimal processing, more often than not is organic, and doesn’t contain any additives, preservatives, or chemicals.
After years of surfing the Web, Googling health issues, and reading all I can, I decided to take my learning one step further. I then became a Certified Dr. Sears’ Health Coach, where I provide scientifically proven Health and Wellness solutions to help children, adults, and aging seniors prevent disease, sharpen thinking, boost, energy, and help you take charge of your health. I teach online classes, Corporate Wellness Programs, Consultations and Workshops. I’m sharing my journey here and I hope anything I mention on this site may be able to help you too. Please take this note as the usual disclaimer though. I’m not a doctor so don’t rely on me for medical expertise that your doctor is trained for. However, I’ve learned that it doesn’t matter how old you are….it takes a Village…..or at least a network of like-minded people open to learn from each other. My goal is to share my story, my recipes, articles I write on what I’ve learned from Dr. Sears, and my experiences with you. Reach out to me to find out more about my Health and Wellness services as I’d love to help you too.
