The proper definition is that a Health Coach is certified to facilitate a process with clients that affords healthy, sustainable behavioral changes by challenging a client to develop their inner wisdom, identify their values, and transform their goals into action. Health Coaching draws on the principles from positive psychology, and appreciative inquiry, and the practices of motivational interviewing and goal setting. A Health Coach is one who motivates and educates individuals to cultivate positive health choices. I can show you ‘how’ to get healthy!
Simply put, Health Coaches educate and support clients to achieve their health goals through lifestyle and behavior changes that generate sustainable healthy lifestyles choices, which help prevent or, in some cases possibly reverse, some common diseases, like obesity, diabetes, and heart disease, to help you thrive.
Additionally, a Health Coach is an integral member of the holistic health community. We believe that being healthy begins with knowledge. Knowledge is power! And, hiring a Certified Health Coach can be a serious game changer for people who are caught up in the obesity epidemic, live a sedentary lifestyle, have diabetes, poor nutrition, chronic stress, and more!
A critical piece of my practice is that I advise clients that in order to be successful, step one is they need to tell their health practitioners they are working with a Certified Health Coach. This is especially true if they are taking any type of prescription or over-the-counter medication. According to the American Heart Association, some foods – even healthy ones – can make your medications less effective. Eating healthy can help reverse a condition or reduce the need for medication. And, yes, even healthy foods, including fruits and vegetables, can cause unintended and possibly dangerous interactions with certain medications. Plus, some over-the-counter medications used to treat cold and allergy symptoms can cause certain medications to have more potent effects. That’s why it’s critical that clients advise their health practitioner that they are working with a Certified Health Coach to change their lifestyle.
Now that you know what a Health Coach does, I need to be clear on what a health coach doesn’t do. A Health Coach is not a doctor. Health Coaches cannot diagnose conditions, treat, cure, prescribe medications, or recommend lower or higher doses of your current medications. Many health coaches are not personal trainers, although we teach the health benefits of exercise. In case you don’t know me, a Health Coach is also not a drill sergeant. We do not scream orders at you, or berate you for not meeting your goals in a specified amount of time, nor do we embarrass you in front of other people. We simply understand that life happens, and we work with you and support you in every way we can to achieve optimal wellness.
Health Coaches are at the forefront of today’s health revolution. Health Coaches provide the nutritional and lifestyle guidance that society desperately needs to find its way back to optimal health. Health Coaches are needed so seriously because at no time or place in history have we been at such a juncture where:
• 2/3 of adults and 1/3 of children and teens are currently obese or overweight
• Since 1980, the number of obese adults has doubled
• Skyrocketing numbers for obese children since 1970
– Ages 6 – 11 Increased 400%
– Ages 12 – 19 Increased 300%
• Obesity during pregnancy increases long term health risks for both the mother and child
• Allergy epidemic spawns high rates of conditions like eczema, asthma, digestive problems, food intolerance’s, and autoimmune conditions from toxins in the land, air, water, and food
Depending on what your specific goals are, whether it is to lose weight, eat better, reduce medications, increase energy, or just get healthy for you and your family, a Certified Health Coach can give you the tools for your toolbox to put you on the path to success.
If you think about it, the ‘Best of the Best’ successful people have Coaches! The best athletes have technique coaches. The top singers have vocal coaches. People who are at the top of their game and craft have coaches and mentors. Even people who go to the gym to work out have a personal fitness trainer. Why should it be any different with our health? And, isn’t our health more important than anything? If we want to be at the top of our health, we need someone who can guide us on the best path – A Certified Health Coach.
My last point is that I’m a ‘Certified’ Health Coach. This is an important ingredient. A certification is one way for you to determine if a Health Coach has the training, knowledge, and skills to properly serve your needs. By being a Dr. Sears Certified Health Coach, it says that I have been trained and educated in the latest techniques, exercises, philosophies, and skills. It also says I am dedicated to my profession. Most of all, it says that I’m able to successfully help you achieve your goals and objectives.
